Why credentials may be absent
The capture device may not create them, the editing app may not preserve them, the delivery platform may strip them, or the format and export path may not support the manifest.

Inspect ordinary metadata, look for the original source, compare hashes when you have trusted copies, and consider contextual evidence. Do not infer intent from absence alone.
Ask whether inspection succeeded before interpreting absence
A neutral not-found result requires a supported file and a completed inspection. If decoding failed, the file was truncated or the format path is unsupported, the tool does not know whether credentials are present.
This distinction prevents a technical error from becoming a claim about provenance. The interface should provide a retry or format explanation for failures rather than using the same empty badge for every path.

Why derivatives commonly lose credentials
Cropping, screenshotting, copying pixels through a canvas, metadata cleaning and platform optimization can produce a new file without the original manifest. A not-found result on that derivative says nothing certain about the source asset.
When possible, request the original download and compare hashes or dimensions. If the only copy is a derivative, document that limitation instead of attributing missing credentials to intent.
Use a neutral next-step sequence
Inspect ordinary EXIF, XMP and file facts, then look for an earlier source. Search for a publisher-provided Content Credentials view when one is available, but do not upload sensitive files to unknown verification services merely to obtain a badge.
For high-stakes verification, preserve the file and use more than one evidence source. Provenance, metadata, visual context and source reporting can support each other; none should be turned into a stand-alone truth score.
What this does not prove
A metadata result describes the fields and structures that the supported parser could read. It does not, by itself, prove authenticity, intent, authorship or the truth of the visible scene.
