First: check the hidden information
Inspect GPS, capture time, camera identifiers, owner fields, captions and software history. A risk-first summary is easier to act on than a wall of raw tag names.

Second: check what anyone can see
Metadata cleaning cannot remove private information that is part of the image itself. Look closely at the full frame before sharing.

Keep a separate clean copy
Preserve the original privately, create a clearly named clean copy, inspect that copy again, and upload only the copy you intended to share. A clean metadata result reduces one privacy risk; it is not a promise of anonymity.
Review four layers in a fixed order
Start with embedded location and identifiers. Then inspect the visible pixels, including reflections and background documents. Check the filename and surrounding message, and finally consider whether provenance information matters for the recipient.
A fixed order prevents a reassuring green metadata badge from ending the review too early. It also keeps the process quick: most casual images can be cleared in under a minute when each layer has a simple question.

What the four profiles demonstrated
The GPS profile required cleaning even with neutral pixels. The address profile remained unsafe despite empty GPS fields. The technically clean profile still needed an audience and filename check. Missing credentials produced no authenticity or privacy verdict.
These profiles are decision tests, not statistics about how often each risk occurs. Their purpose is to make the interface resist a common reasoning error: allowing one absent signal to cancel an unrelated risk.
Create a purpose-specific sharing copy
Keep the original privately, crop or redact a derivative, remove unnecessary metadata and use a neutral filename. Open the final export and run the checks again because editing software can add its own fields.
When the image could expose a child, home, workplace, confidential document or vulnerable person, choose a narrower audience or do not share it. A tool can identify file facts; it cannot know the social consequences for you.
What this does not prove
A metadata result describes the fields and structures that the supported parser could read. It does not, by itself, prove authenticity, intent, authorship or the truth of the visible scene.
