Fine texture, noise, sharpening and viewing distance affect the final result. A simple calculation cannot judge the artistic or technical quality of every file.

The calculation behind every row

Print width in inches equals pixel width divided by target PPI; height uses the same formula. Centimetres are inches multiplied by 2.54. No density tag or hidden quality score is required.

For 2400 × 3000 pixels, the formula gives 8 × 10 inches at 300 PPI, 10 × 12.5 at 240 and 16 × 20 at 150. The aspect ratio remains 4:5 in every row.

How we verified the calculator

The same calculatePrintSizes function used by the tool received the controlled dimensions. The automated test compares every PPI, inch width and inch height against exact expected values rather than checking only that a table appeared.

This is a deterministic calculation, so browser or operating-system differences should not change the result. Rounding is applied only for display.

Turn the table into a print decision

Start with viewing distance and subject detail. A close portrait book and a poster across a room do not need the same pixel density. Then check whether cropping will reduce the available dimensions.

If the required size falls between rows, enter or calculate the actual target PPI. Do not change the density tag merely to satisfy a form if the underlying pixels are insufficient.

Quality factors outside the equation

The formula cannot see blur, noise, JPEG artifacts, sharpening halos or poor focus. Nor can it model printer resolution, ink spread, paper texture or color management.

For a valuable print, inspect at 100%, soft-proof when appropriate and order a small test. The calculator narrows feasible sizes; it does not guarantee artistic quality.

Avoid upscaling by accident

Some print dialogs silently resample to reach a chosen density. Upscaling may make edges smoother but cannot restore lost texture. Record whether resampling is enabled before comparing results.

Keep the original pixels and save any upscaled version as a derivative. That makes future comparisons honest and prevents a large dimension number from being mistaken for new captured detail.

Worked examples beyond the headline table

A 6000 × 4000 photograph calculates to 20 × 13.33 inches at 300 PPI and 40 × 26.67 inches at 150 PPI before cropping. A square 3000 × 3000 image becomes 10 × 10 inches at 300 PPI. The formula behaves the same regardless of orientation or subject.

Cropping changes the available pixels. If the 6000 × 4000 source is cropped to a square 4000 × 4000 composition, the 300 PPI square is about 13.33 inches, not 20. Always calculate from the final crop rather than the camera’s original dimensions.

A border, bleed or wrap also consumes printable area. Add those production requirements before deciding that the calculated size exactly matches the finished visible image.

If only one dimension is fixed, preserve the aspect ratio and calculate the other dimension rather than stretching the image to fit.
